No mage has any business going into the Arishok duel without a ton of health potions and lyrium coming out of their ears, ok?
Is it a fair fight? No. But you know what also isn't fair? Not being allowed to decide what kind of duel it is going to be. And I'm thinking something along the lines of butterfly catching or slam poetry, not stabbing and impaling.

Reader Comments:

This is why mages need to adopt the tactic of immediately running out of the room, locking the door, and then shooting fireballs through the keyhole.

Glitches can be wonderful things.

This game is one of those "let`s give enemies more health and damage to make it harder" games...sadly.

I see no explosives. Explosives are wondrous things. Explosives are the only way I managed to off the high dragon in the bone pit.

once again, i'll just put this here:

the problem is when you do a duel fight using a 4 party system mechanic it's just not gonna work. the testiment of that it's that you need to use the same mechanic when using a warrior, warrior should be able to fight head to head with the arishok. in order for duels to work in dragon age, a different system for them needs to be implemented.

@Broseidon: as someone who play nightmare and doesn't use explosives, i find that good tactics works better when offing a dragon.

@zenat: Note to Bioware: I would pay good money to see a major quest in DA4 end in a slam poetry duel. Just sayin'...

I'm low-key hoping that we'll be able to mix archetypes in the upcoming Dragon Age.

It should make sense for an apostate mage to have picked up some rogueish skills for instance.

Hawke would've appreciated some skills in blade-work and dodging against the Arishok.

I think we are beating a dead horse here. Running around in circles in a duel with a melee guy is not just in da2, it is present in many games where you play a mage type character. There is also: Lorne (run away cast stoneskin+displacement run back), Akachi(not technically 1v1 but skill), Loghain, all dream sequence fights in dos2. Even more annoying the fights with the valsharess from nwn(hotu)(specifically if she runs out of spells, or you do), the drow arena from bg2, and the captain from throne of bhall. If you are a mage in those games it is even more difficult than the arishock as drow are difficult to penetrate.

That's why I love that you can have a mage build in DAI that regenerates your shield when you hit your opponents (unless it was nerfed too as was the blade from knight enchanter).
It would have been a lot more dignified fight if Hawke did have something like that.

I always imagined a backpack with two long straws coming out of it so Hawke could just get a little sip of whatever potion while RUNNING THE FECK AWAY

Posted @ June 5th, 2019, 8:37 am

@Guest: But... you can't loot through a keyhole? And surely looting is the most important part of a battle?

@Sharp-Claw: Getting charged by the Arishok was quite awful (in a 'I hate this, it hurts, I was doing a thing and now I'm not, good move' kind of a way) but yeah, I'm no fan of long battles. And also, a huge super not fan of killing the Arishok.

@Broseidon: I uh, you see... I... I keep forgetting about explosives. Even in the game. That is why. In my playthroughs we cry and run when we are out of mana and low on hitpoints and hope that Aveline can handle it.

@Blazypika2: I imagine that the duel would have been ten times worse if you were the healer of the party too.
And if you play on nightmare... hat's off. I am impressed and also horrified.

@kro: Me too. But we would be stuck with the awful conversation wheel still, so we wouldn't know what we were going to say in our glorious showdown, and that would be an issue.

@Deonis: I just want to be able to be a blood mage again. I felt cheated out of extremely strained relations with Cullen in DAI here.

@wildmageguy: Mages should by all accounts have epic leg muscles, is what I hear you saying. Maybe even be a bit faster than other classes, and not just because they aren't running around in plate armor?
"Drow are difficult to penetrate." Thank you for this out of context quote. I shall treasure it always.

@mamiser: Let's be real, Hawke has never done anything with dignity, so why start now? ;)

@Guesty Guestface: That would be glorious, but I would argue in favor of throwing the empty glass bottles at the Arishok while running away.

red alert. I repeat, the people who have made dos2, larian have released info on bg3.

Also, phrasing.

Posted @ June 7th, 2019, 8:20 am

@wildmageguy: I saw !!!!!!!!!!! The excitement is real, I tell you. Am I going to get to see Viconia again? Am I getting drow in general? I am definitely getting mindflayers and they are like, my second favorite. There might be tieflings, beholders, possibly even mimics aölsdkjfsölkdfj WANT

Posted @ June 7th, 2019, 3:56 pm

My file is 97% ready. If you know about larian they have a good track record: with original sin 2, and dragon commander.

I think Vic has a several centuries of years left, but that would explain why fallen heroes was sent to some other studio. What I am most worried about is that I won't be able to keep a certain funny wizard character kit, care to guess which one?

Be careful though, dark elven women are known to glitch.

Posted @ June 7th, 2019, 4:28 pm

@zenat: That is would probably be like that really annoying quest in Jade Empire where you had to have a competitive philosophical debate with the westerners. But maybe you could at least compose your poems line-by-line...I don't want to give up on the dream.

Posted @ June 7th, 2019, 11:55 pm

Ah, I remember this fight. I've only ever played mage, so I can't speak for other classes, but there is a certain monotony to running away until your paralysis rune recharges.

Posted @ June 8th, 2019, 2:43 am

@wildmageguy: I haven't played anything by them (but I have bought a bunch of their stuff now) but it is comforting that people are very excited about them as a developer. Here's hoping they treat their staff well too.

Look, Edwin was the best wizard in that game and that's just a fact, so I'm going to guess Edwin. With or without his 'friend' that I am still 90% certain is some kind of fiend that he messed up a spell with and got stuck in his head.

@kro: I WISH I knew what you were talking about. My copy of Jade Empire will not load. It took me half an hour to get it going the first time and... I just can't spend half an hour of my life getting angry at technology whenever I want to play a game, you know?

@Lord Crane: If you want to run away screaming without it being monotonous... Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines. The werewolf mission. I thought I found a safe spot... I thought I could relax for a second and gather my thoughts. I was wrong.

Posted @ June 27th, 2019, 3:00 pm

No, the wild mage sorc character class. But yes, sure I do not see why not Edwin will seek immortality, it is known, so that might be a justification and so vampire edwin. But if we do play the bhaullspawn then the other characters possibly shipped with charname might make an appearance because of some reason and you know what that means?

Posted @ July 24th, 2019, 9:34 pm

@wildmageguy: I just want Viconia to tell me to fetch her something to eat... and also yes very much go into the voice that Edwin talks to thing. I REALLY want it to be a fiend of some kind ok? ... and I also want another chance to kill Drizzt if he appears. Top 3 things I want from the old games, right there.

Posted @ July 28th, 2019, 1:13 pm

Ohh booii

My mage is only a bloodmage so that I can headcanon that when the Arishok impales you THROUGH YOUR GOD DAMN STOMACH AND OUT YOUR BACK the only reason you don't IMMEDIATELY DIE OR AT LEAST FALL OR FAINT is that blood magic contains that blood for magical usage.

Posted @ September 20th, 2019, 5:13 am

@ThatLurker: Honestly, I think that there is a secret stat that you can't influence like you would dexterity or the like, and it's luck. Hawke has an ungodly amount of luck. Even while having deplorable luck. Hawke is the Rincewind of Thedas, and that is how they can take a giant blade through the stomach (repeatedly, if you play like I do...) and still sort of... walk it off.
