It's been a while, but I really did marvel at how utterly unsuitable the imperial agent's companions were. Not that I didn't like them... just... you know... I questioned a lot of choices made when they were put on your team.
That being said, Davin has two siblings with the Republic, so perhaps this group is just handed the least sensitive missions and left to secretly hand the information on to whoever.
Vector in particular also doesn't really have a pertinent skillset. He's a diplomat but that's not what he's doing for us because somehow he's also sufficiently badass with a staff to be a 'covert assault operative.' I feel like both him and Qyzen (Herald of the Scorekeeper? Really?) were ideas that they had for companions but didn't really know who to give them to.
I was really disappointed to hear that all companions were mandatory in swtor. I do realize that it's for balancing purposes - as the companions all have different perks etc, and you really shouldn't be in a situation where you can't both use your professions and quest with one; but Skadge, Lieutenant Pierce and Torian (or whatever his name was...) just annoyed the living hell out of me, I would've gladly dumped them out of the cargo hold at earliest convenience... It would also make Malavai Quinn's quests more meaningful...
No one would suspect the diplomat with a staff to kick ass 0^0, not even the assassins. Beside its the most common melee form among the killiks, if you fight a lot of them, via spend time on alderaanan, via spend time with shitheads, via wish the deathstar was made
