I know we said that we'd return to Dragon Age come February, but due to the trip to France and my apparent inability to count there's this extra SWTOR comic. And no time to make a DA comic. Thus, this.
During the beta period of Star Wars the Old Republic, I read that Lucas Arts promptly informed fans that there's no homosexuality in Star Wars. During that time words like 'homosexuality' were also censored in the chat. We have since then been told that the 'no homosexuality' issue would be fixed in later updates.
We have been promised that Mass Effect 3 will be the first in the series to feature male homosexuality. I would not say it would be first to include homosexuality, because you could romance women while playing female Shepard since game 1.
I have a dream, that one day Bioware will include companions such as "undeniably butch gay man" and "transvestite played straight and not for laughs". I have great faith in Bioware, 'tis true, and I do believe they will be the ones who go there first in a game with a stereotypically male audience.
Sorry for the rather political turn but it's a matter close to my heart. When one kind of homosexuality is viewed as ok, is even sexualised, while the other is censored I get... really angry :I
Equality and respect, it's good for you.
I can't agree more
It's especially common in Russia. Especially our men... "Gay? NO! NEVER! Lesbi? Hoooot!" So... stupid, ya know
Hooray for ME3 having s/s relationships! :D
I'm so making a gay Shepard now. :I
@byarru + @katerinafm: I think it is a normal reaction in a heteronormative patriarchal society. But that doesn't mean it's not wrong or that we can't change. Society needs time and good exposure, is all :)
@Logan Cloud: Haha, I have so many variables I feel I need to do XD I have a female Garrus romancing renegade who let all of the Cerberus crew die, but I feel that I need a male Jack nice romancing paragon too... But yes, perhaps a neutral gay Shepard is needed. One of them is going to have to let the entire crew die and the other needs to get that "no one left behind" achievement. And if I get to romance Zaeed, then all is well with the world XD
@zenat: I'm not gay, or even bi... But if Sassy Gay Hawke has taught me anything... Gay is the REAL way to play! XD
None can resist the advances of Sassy Gay Hawke! Except Varric. The manliest man that ever manned was not to be loved, sadly. I wager if there where more Sassy Gay Hawke's changing the world, we'd be set!
"Society needs time and good exposure."
Okay girls, let's work on this. Who's up for some good exposure?! XD
But really, it's maddening that this is still even an issue. And the whole debate on the Bioware forums about homosexuality in DA is filled with comments one would hope to never read in our days. One recurring argument that annoys me is that "it's unrealistic to have 4 bisexuals between 5 romanceable companions". Dude, I'd dare say it's unrealistic to have 4 MAGES or two ELVES in a group of anything.
Also... "why can't we do like in DA:O where there was a straight guy, a straight chick, a bisexual guy and a bisexual chick?". Come on, one of my DA:O characters suffered (oh, the pain!) of being a lesbian and only having nutcase nun Leliana to shag when delicious and completely society-rules-defiant Morrigan was there, all lonely too. Players who want the option lose it, while those who don't want it don't even NEED to use it.
In my heart, Male Mage Hawke loves Renegate Terrorist Anders and his story to me would lose a great part of its appeal if the romance wasn't there. Now what the difference does it make to someone who doesn't WANT it is beyond me.
Have you seen that there are threads of furious fans going on and on about how betrayed they feel because Anders 'wasn't bisexual in Awakening' and that 'if you play female Hawke, he's straight'. ... Awakening had no romances and sexuality wasn't part of the story at all. Also, Anders not mentioning he went Fereldan Circle with Karl doesn't mean it didn't happen.
Mass Effect had it worse. But I have hope. Bioware's games are about the only ones that still catch my attention and it's so frustrating and depressing to see that they can go so far as storytelling goes but still struggle with something that shouldn't be an issue at all.
@ChaoticNihilist: Hrm, you raise a good point. Leliana was horrible, so as a lesbian, yes, you would be stuck with one dreadful option. Though some people like her, somehow.
I do still prefer Origins version over DA2, because the characters have a set sexuality as part of their character. It may limit the main character and the romance alternatives, yes, but it makes the companions seem more... real.
I would like to see romancable characters who are flat out gay though. It would, after all, not limit the main character any more than a heterosexual character would.
As far as Anders is concerned... I'm willing to buy he was bisexual all along but didn't bring it up. He's got so many issues going on, that if he was shagging Karl or not seems very minor to me.
@zenat: I do agree that sexuality is a very important part of a character's personality. But I think the PC's development is more important, so a companion's priority is to 'play along'. But I agree with you that bi/homosexuality simply doesn't fit with some characters. Like, if someone like Alistair or Cullen suddenly expressed interest in the same gender, Bioware would have to work pretty hard to make it make sense.
I'll join you in your wait for 'flat out gay character'. The only one that comes to mind is Arcade Gannon, from Fallout New Vegas, but there is no love for the PC. The nuclear apocalypse killed True Love.
As for Anders not mentioning any affair before, well, you said it yourself in a comic here - he's in love with The Cause XD (and I dare say he loves it above all things even if Hawke romances him).
@ChaoticNihilist: I dunno... to me there are two things that are a MUST in games. A good plot and good characters. If I don't love a single character, the game has failed me no matter how awesome the plot.
To have them just 'play along' feels wrong, like they are being transformed into cardboard characters for the sake of the player. Just like I want them to tell me that I'm an asshole if I make asshole choices, and even leave the group if I go too far, I want them to have a set sexuality. It can be bisexuality, of course, but I don't mind being told that sorry, no, they are not into women/men/you specifically because you're an ass.
Hm? What? I loved Lelianna, she was my best bud. Not girlfriend, though... Miss her...
Yep, sexuality must fits into character's personality. I was really surprised that Anders became... bi. And Merril? Wait what?..
But duh, they retconed Anders, Merril, Isabella and many other characters so I'm not surprised
@byarru: To be fair, Anders bisexuality was not really a change so much as a not-mentioned in Awakening. He never said he wasn't into men, after all. Merrill's sudden daftness, however, is a retcon that only makes sense because they had to make the blood mage less horrible. Adorably derpy helps XD
So yeah, lots of retcons... but I think overall the result justifies it. I mean, look at all those handsome qunari ;)
I come from the future of Inquisition, and there is a transvestite played straight, without them being such a joke. And he's voiced by Jennifer Hale.
